12 Oct 2013

Monday 14 October is International Day of the Photobook in honour of the 170th anniversary of the publication in Britain of the first known photobook: Photographs of British Algae by Anne Atkins.

Here at the Bookshop we are all about the photobook so we have laid on a series of events and special products for all photobook lovers.

To celebrate World Photobook Day 2013 there will be 5% discount on all photography books in-store all day on Monday 14 October.

Also on Monday on The Photographers’ Gallery blog you can see the second of our series of Q&As with photobook publishers with Aron Morel of Morel Books.

On Thursday 16 October we have an aquatic themed book signing double header.

Ed Burtynsky is in London for his exhibition opening at Flowers Galleryand at 13.00 he will be here signing copies of his epic new book Waterpublished by Steidl. If you liked Ed’s inaugural exhibition here last year you will be blown away by this astounding new book.

This is followed at 18.00 when you can join us for a drink at the launch of Spill by Daniel Beltrá published by the excellent new British publisher GOST Books. Spill looks at the Deepwater Horizon oil spill making this environmental disaster look intensely colourful and at times completely abstract.

Coincidentally Ed has photographed the same boats at the same spill in Water, were they both circling in planes at the same time?

At the end of the week we will be showcasing classic British photography of the 1970s and 80s with book signings by British colour photography pioneers and offering some classic vinatge books for sale in-store.

On Saturday 19 October at 16.00 Tom Wood will be signing copies of his new book Men Women published by Steidl. This book was delayed and missed both our exhibition last year and the recent National media Museum exhibition but we can tell you that this excellent book has been worth the wait.

Then on Sunday we will be welcoming Peter MitchellPeter’s bookStrangely Familiar published by Nazraeli Press has been very successful and is close to selling out, who knew photographs of run down parts of Leeds would be so internationally successful? Peter is an analog kind of guy who does not believe in mobile phones, email and JPEGs and will be talking about his work and presenting it on a good old fashioned slide projector in the Bookshop at 16.00 followed by a book signing.

Finally we have three out of print absolute classic British photobooks for sale in the Bookshop; In Flagrante by Chris Killip plus Beyond caring A1 The Great North Road by Paul Graham. These vinatge books have been supplied by our friends at Maggs Bros. Pleasecontact the Bookshop if you are interested in these rare books

All events are free and do not need booking.

If you cannot make it to any of the events and would like to pre-order a signed copy of any of these books please contact the Bookshop.

And don’t forget that in-between all these events on Wednesday 16 October we have the Fujifilm Instax Day where you can test the new high-spec Instax Mini 90 Neo Classic instant camera with Nathan from Fujifilm and get a free film with every Instax Camera purchase.
